Custom Size Mattresses — Cut to Your Exact Dimensions
A custom size mattress is a mattress made to dimensions that differ from the standard UK bed sizes — single (90 x 190cm), double (135 x 190cm), king (150 x 200cm) and super king (180 x 200cm). If your bed base falls outside these measurements by even a few centimetres, a custom size mattress is the correct solution. We cut custom size mattresses to any length and width with no extra charge for non-standard dimensions, in your choice of foam specification.
Custom mattress sizes are needed more commonly than most people expect. A bed frame that is 138cm wide rather than the standard 135cm double will not take a standard double mattress without an unsightly gap down each side. A platform bed built into a room at 185cm rather than the standard 190cm length will leave a standard mattress overhanging the end. In both cases a custom size mattress — cut to the actual dimensions — is the only proper solution. We have been cutting mattresses to custom sizes for over 40 years from our Birmingham workshop.

Antique and vintage bed frames pre-date the standardisation of modern mattress sizes. A Victorian or Edwardian double bed is frequently 127cm or 132cm wide rather than the modern 135cm standard — close enough to look like a standard double but too different for a standard mattress to fit properly.
European bed frames use different standard dimensions from UK beds. A European double (140 x 200cm) and a European king (160 x 200cm) are both non-standard in the UK, and a custom size mattress is needed for either.
Built-in alcove beds and platform beds are made to fit the available space in the room rather than a standard mattress size. If the alcove is 188cm long, a 190cm mattress will not fit and a 185cm standard length does not exist — a custom 188cm mattress is the solution.
Caravans, motorhomes and campervans almost universally require a custom mattress size. Caravan bed platforms are designed around the floor plan and manufacturer's measurements, not domestic mattress sizes. See our caravan mattress range for model-specific information.
Bespoke furniture and joinery — a bed frame made by a carpenter or furniture maker is built to the customer's specification, which may or may not align with standard mattress sizes. A custom size mattress ensures a proper fit regardless of the frame dimensions.
Children's beds and bunk beds — particularly imported or older bunk bed frames — are frequently a non-standard width. A custom size mattress cut to the exact width of the bunk ensures a safe, snug fit with no gaps at the sides.
Always measure the bed base — not the old mattress. Measure the full internal length and width of the base, taking each measurement twice to confirm. If the two readings differ, measure a third time and use the most consistent figure.
For a rectangular custom size mattress, length and width are all we need. For any non-rectangular shape — corner cuts, curved ends, angled sides — additional measurements are needed. A photograph of the base from above alongside a tape measure is the most reliable way to communicate an unusual shape.
A note on thickness: for most bed frames, any depth is suitable and the choice is personal preference. For bunk beds and mid-sleepers, measure the distance from the base to the top of the safety rail — the mattress must sit below this height. For drop-down motorhome beds, check the clearance in the raised position and the weight capacity of the lifting mechanism before choosing a specification.

European bed frames use different standard dimensions from UK beds and are a common reason for needing a custom size mattress in the UK. The most common European sizes are:
- European Single: 90 x 200cm (10cm longer than UK single)
- European Double: 140 x 200cm (5cm wider and 10cm longer than UK double)
- European King: 160 x 200cm (10cm wider than UK king, 10cm longer)
- European Super King: 180 x 200cm (same width as UK super king but 10cm longer)
