Made to Measure Mattress Toppers

Topper depth is the most important decision after foam type. The right depth depends on what you want the topper to achieve and the condition of your existing mattress.

1 inch to 2 inches (2.5cm to 5cm)

A thin topper adds a modest surface adjustment without significantly changing the feel of the underlying mattress. Suitable where the mattress is fundamentally sound but you want to take the edge off a firm surface, or add a small amount of pressure relief. Also the practical choice for bunk beds and mid-sleepers where additional height creates a safety issue.

3 inches to 4 inches (7.5cm to 10cm)

The most popular depth range. Provides a meaningful change in sleeping surface feel without requiring a full mattress replacement. A 3 inch memory foam topper on a firm reflex mattress creates a noticeably softer, more pressure-relieving surface. Suitable for most applications where the topper is the primary comfort layer.

5 inches to 7 inches (12.5cm to 18cm)

A deep topper that functions almost as a mattress in its own right when placed on a firm base. Useful where the existing mattress is very firm or worn but structurally sound — the deep topper effectively replaces the comfort layer entirely. Popular for caravan mattresses where the platform is solid and the original mattress has compressed.

8 inches to 10 inches (20cm to 25cm)

The deepest topper range — effectively a full mattress depth sitting on top of your existing base. At this depth the topper is the sleeping surface and the base provides support only. Useful for unusual platforms where a topper is more practical to manoeuvre than a full mattress, or where the base is solid and a full mattress is not required.

Caravan and motorhome mattresses are almost always a non-standard size — a standard topper will not fit them. A made to measure topper cut to the exact dimensions of your caravan mattress is the correct solution, whether you want to improve comfort on an ageing original mattress or add a memory foam layer to an existing reflex foam mattress.

For caravans with shaped mattresses — corner cuts, curved ends, angled sides — we cut the topper to the same shape as the mattress. A rectangular topper on a shaped mattress will overhang the shaped edges and bunch during the night. A shaped topper cut to the exact mattress profile sits flat and stays in position.

For campervans and van conversions, toppers are a popular and practical alternative to a full mattress replacement — lighter, easier to manoeuvre into the van, and effective at improving comfort on a sleeping platform that is fundamentally sound but uncomfortable to sleep on. A 3 to 4 inch memory foam topper is the most common specification for van conversion sleeping platforms.

Antique and vintage bed frames pre-date the standardisation of modern mattress sizes. A Victorian or Edwardian bed that is 127cm wide rather than the modern 135cm double will not take a standard double topper — it will be either 8cm too wide on each side or require trimming. A made to measure topper cut to the actual mattress dimensions is the correct solution.

The same applies to European bed frames — a European double at 140cm wide requires a topper 5cm wider than a standard UK double topper. Built-in alcove beds, platform beds and bespoke furniture builds frequently fall outside standard dimensions and need a made to measure topper for a proper fit.

For any non-standard bed, measure the mattress itself — length and width — and give us those dimensions. We cut to that measurement exactly.

A shaped topper is a topper cut to a non-rectangular profile — one with corner cuts, curved ends, angled sides, or a circular shape. Shaped toppers are needed wherever the underlying mattress is not a rectangle.

For a shaped topper, we need the same measurements as for the mattress itself. For corner cuts, give us the overall length and width plus the two measurements defining each cut — how far along the side the cut starts, and how far along the end it finishes. For curved ends, a photograph of the mattress from above alongside a tape measure is the most reliable way to communicate the shape. For circular toppers — including the 210cm IKEA Sultan Säng round bed — the diameter is all we need.

Always measure the mattress itself — not the bed base, and not an existing topper. The topper should sit flat on top of the mattress surface with no overhang and no gaps at the edges.

For a rectangular mattress, measure the full length and width. Take each measurement twice to confirm. If the two readings differ by more than a centimetre, measure a third time and use the most consistent figure.

For shaped mattresses, follow the same measuring process as for the mattress shape — corner cut measurements, curve radius or a photograph as applicable. The topper must match the mattress shape exactly to sit correctly.
