Several depths, with the centimetres beside each one and the price on each. The deeper it is the more comfort and support it gives, so take the deepest the frame will hold — a low footboard or a fitted drawer underneath may decide it for you.

Medium, firm or hard. A preference rather than a quality: firm is not better made, it simply pushes back more. It does not change the price.

A plain rectangle costs nothing extra, and not every bed is one: a corner taken off to clear a doorway, a rounded end on an antique frame, a chimney breast in the way. Choose the shapes you need and watch the price as you add them.

One piece unless the mattress has to come apart — a loft room it cannot be carried into in one, or a bed that splits for guests. The pieces do not have to be equal; they are usually a jigsaw of different lengths and widths.
