A made to measure mattress is a mattress cut to your exact dimensions rather than a standard domestic size. Whether your bed frame is a centimetre off a standard size, a completely non-standard dimension, or an unusual shape entirely — we cut to your measurements with no extra charge for bespoke sizing. We have been making mattresses to measure for over 40 years from our Birmingham workshop, in reflex foam, memory foam, Novotex latex foam and pocket sprung.
Made to measure mattresses are needed in a wider range of situations than most people expect. Antique and vintage bed frames are rarely a standard modern size. Cabin beds, bespoke bed frames, room divider beds and platform beds built into alcoves frequently fall outside standard dimensions. Caravans, motorhomes, campervans and canal boats almost always require a made to measure mattress rather than a standard domestic size. Whatever your situation, the process is the same — measure your bed base, give us the dimensions, and we make your mattress to fit.

Antique and vintage bed frames are one of the most common reasons people search for a made to measure mattress. Bed frames made before the standardisation of modern mattress sizes — typically pre-1970s — are frequently a few centimetres different from today's standard single, double, king or super king. A standard mattress will either hang over the edges or leave a visible gap. A made to measure mattress fits the frame exactly.
Bespoke and custom bed frames built by joiners, interior designers or furniture makers are made to fit a specific room or aesthetic rather than a standard mattress size. A made to measure mattress is the only option for these beds.
Caravans, motorhomes and campervans almost always require a made to measure mattress. Caravan bed platforms are sized to fit the floor plan of the caravan rather than a domestic mattress size. See our caravan mattress range for model-specific information.
Van conversions and campervan builds frequently have sleeping platforms constrained by the van body dimensions — a standard mattress is too long, too wide or both. A made to measure mattress cut to the exact platform dimensions is the practical solution.
Canal boats and narrow boats have sleeping berths that vary considerably in size and shape. A made to measure mattress is almost always required for a proper fit.
Alcove beds and built-in platforms in which the sleeping surface is built into the room architecture are rarely a standard size. If your bed is built in rather than freestanding, measure the base carefully — it will almost certainly need a made to measure mattress.
Always measure the bed base itself — not the old mattress. An old mattress may have been cut incorrectly or may have compressed over time, giving inaccurate dimensions. The base is the definitive measurement.
For a rectangular mattress: measure the full length and full width of the base. Take each measurement twice to confirm. If the two readings differ by more than a centimetre, measure again — a slight difference may indicate the frame is not perfectly square, in which case let us know and we will advise.
For a shaped mattress — one with corner cuts, curved ends, angled sides or any other non-rectangular feature — additional measurements are needed depending on the shape. A photograph of the base alongside a tape measure is the most reliable way to communicate an unusual shape. Send it to us before ordering and we will confirm the measurements needed before cutting.
Thickness: for most bed frames there are no restrictions on mattress depth and the choice is down to personal preference and budget. The exception is bunk beds and mid-sleepers where the safety rail height limits the maximum mattress thickness — measure the distance from the base to the top of the safety rail before ordering.
Firm and supportive. The most practical and affordable made to measure mattress option. Suitable for everyday use, guest beds and any application where value and practicality are the priority.
Higher density gives meaningfully better support and longevity. Worth the modest additional cost for a mattress that will be slept on regularly. The same firm feel as standard reflex but more durable.
Moulds to body shape, eases pressure points and reduces movement disturbance — particularly useful for couples where one partner moving at night disturbs the other. Tencel breathable cover as standard.
Naturally hypoallergenic and exceptionally breathable. Retains its shape over years of regular use better than standard foam. The best long-term option for anyone with allergies or sensitive skin.
Individually wrapped springs that move independently, matching body shape precisely and minimising motion transfer. The best sleep quality of all five options at 25cm deep. Made to any size.
Made to measure mattresses are available in soft, medium and firm across all foam specifications. The right firmness depends on your sleeping position, body weight and personal preference.
Soft — best for side sleepers and lighter individuals. Allows the shoulder and hip to sink sufficiently to keep the spine aligned. Not recommended for heavier individuals or stomach sleepers where a soft mattress may cause the spine to bow.
Medium — the most versatile option. Suits most combination sleepers who switch between positions at night. A good default choice when you are unsure, or when two people sharing the bed have different preferences.
Firm — best for back and stomach sleepers, heavier individuals and anyone who finds softer mattresses collapse too much under their weight over time. Provides the strongest spinal support and typically the most durable surface.

There is no minimum or maximum size restriction. We make made to measure mattresses from small single sizes upwards, and to any width or length you require. If you have an unusually large or unusually small requirement, call us and we will confirm what is achievable in your chosen specification.

No — we do not charge extra for bespoke sizing. The price of a made to measure mattress is based on the foam specification and the area of the mattress, not on whether the size is standard or non-standard. A mattress cut to a non-standard dimension costs the same as an equivalent standard size mattress in the same specification.

If we have cut the mattress to the wrong dimensions — different from what you ordered — we will remake it completely free of charge.
